The Science Behind
Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN) is a biosynthetic precursor of Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD+) known to promote cellular NAD+ production and counteract age-associated pathologies associated with a decline in tissue NAD+ levels. In metabolism, NAD+ helps facilitate cellular functions, DNA repair, growth, and many more things. Quite simply, without NAD+, life would not be possible. Unfortunately, as we age, NAD+ production falls behind and our cells start to decay. This is where NMN comes in to save the day: it uses a membrane protein called Slc12a8, which our bodies produce naturally, as a transporter to get into our cells, and once it gets there, it starts doing all the good work repairing our bodies. It is believed in the scientific community that NMN not only can stop aging, but can even reverse it. A renowned scientist and Harvard professor of genetics David Sinclair, who is behind many of the recent anti-aging scientific advancements, is personally taking 1000mg of NMN per day. Currently, NMN is being tested on humans in Japan.
The Story of NMN
NMN is a compound made by our cells and found in foods such as avocado, broccoli and cabbage. Shinichiro Imai experimented with NMN back in 2011 and observed that NMN could treat symptoms of type 2 diabetes by restoring NAD levels. Experiments with NMN in David Sinclair’s lab lead to what he called the Great Mouse Treadmill failure of 2017, when NMN boosted energy levels in mice to such an extent that mice broke a treadmill designed to last for a few years. NMN was found to improve mice balance, coordination, speed, strength, memory, agility, etc. Turned out that treating mice with NMN boosted the cells’ ability to repair DNA damage caused by aging or radiation exposure. Other labs demonstrated that NMN can protect against kidney damage, neurodegereration, mitochondrial diseases and other age-related illnesses.
